Blame the light pollution.

  2. I take it this is in towns and cities, Dave? In our rural spot we still seem to get plenty of both.

  6. Bird and animal habitats around the world are being destroyed not only by light pollution but land clearing by greedy humans the perfect example of this is the Amazon Rainforest.

  7. Thanks everyone

Yes, it is more in towns and cities, but light pollution now affects great swathes of the countryside also.
For the owls it is decreasing the time available for hunting and for the songbirds it is causing them to change the time of their singing.

And yes, there are other factors at work - sound pollution, for example which is preventing birds from mating because they can't hear the calls of their mates.
