Thanks Everyone I found this quite extraordinary - that they've actually done it. Who knew about it? They are said to have clocked up a thousand driverless miles around San Francisco, they've been over The Golden Gate Bridge in the rush hour, and it seems to have passed off almost unnoticed.
I hope they had passengers inside..

Well, I gather Google have insisted that the cars did have a human inside should anything go wrong although that has been questioned.
