to cross the bridge

Thanks for the prompt for this goes to Kat's Sunday Challenge at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads .

I was about to...
when this orange glow
from nowhere,
throwing dark blue shadows,
lit the bridge.

The further bank
was radiating yellow,
so I turned back,
content with my dull world
of monochrome.

Why jeopardise
its comfort and security
for glitz and glamour,
the cajolery
of spectral gaudiness?

  11. Wonderful picture and wholly appropriate poem - as usual. I find that picture a bit haunting.

Someone suggested that a recent title of one of my blog posts would make a good title for a blog. I thought it could make a good prompt for you. (You may not agree, of course, and if so I will entirely understand!)
It is "Picking blackcurrants out of the sandwich" and you'll see the post on my blog.
If the phrase doesn't inspire you it is fine - it's a bit cheeky of me to ask, I know. My only excuse is that I loved the poem you did about my post on the abandoned statue at the Commenwealth Institute last year.

  12. Great question, in the tradition of the "rub" that "must give us pause"!

  13. And it's also a hymn to the monochrome that could mean to priviledge the interior world of colours abandoning the mirage, across any bridge, of any exterior one.

And I agree with Carl, the bridge is a perfect setting, it also reminds me of the myhtic "hedge" of Leopardi in its Infinite.
It reminds me of many things...the theme of Why Crossing? and its lure...is in itself infinite.

  14. Familiarity is so comforting to the extent that it can bore you to death without you knowing it :-).

  18. I'd like to cross the bridge even if it is swing and seems not to be safe, being lead by the orange light.

I'm very addicted to B & W, esp in photography and art. Doesn't mean I don't delight in colour!

Even as a tot I was fascinated by bridges. Quite early on they began to mean all sorts of things to me - long before I learned what a metaphor was.

  20. Excellent as usual... and with very deep symbols that are to be seen with the illustration.

  21. Oh Dave, you simply HAVE to go back and cross that bridge.
I desperately need to know what lies beyond that deliciously gaudy glow!
