Wisley

Not photographs as such, just snaps of a day out at Wisley, Gardens belonging to The Royal Horticultural Society.

Two of these outside the entrance. I kind of made myself a bit persona non grata by refering to them as poppy trees. (Busy Lizzies, actually.)

View looking down from the top of the rockery

The arid sector in the glasshouse.

August is Victorian Month at Wisley : A chance to be taught croquet by Victorian gentlemen.

The first and the last are my favorites. Watering all those begonias must be a challenge unless there is a drip irrigation system set up. Yes, the practical me forgetting to just enjoy the beauty.

What a magnificent place. The Botanical Gardens here in Washington D.C. pale in comparison.

Hi Dave,

I'm with Tabor's favourite pics. The croquet mallets look big for small people! Glad you had a good day.

hi dave, as someone wholly ignorant of the names of plants, birds, butterflies, moths - more or less everything living that i share this place with - i empathize with your choice of names for the "trees". that's what they look like - poppy trees!! i used to love going to the gardens when i was a boy in england. it was usually sunny and warm, there was always the promise of an iced lolly and it was civilized, beautiful, and gentle. have a peaceful day dave. steven

I guess all of us were drawn to the coolness of the opening and closing photos. It's been so hot and humid here lately, that only the DRY heat of a desert could make it seem interesting. :)

Thanks for the mini-vacation at my desk.

Thanks for that lightning tour of Wisley Dave - it is a long time since I was there - it is always perfect - i have never seen a weed there!
Learning to play croquet - wow - I have a croquet set and used to play under our scots pines - it is a dastardly game if you take it seriously.
Have a pleasant weekend - the forecast is quite good for you lot down South - not so good up here.

Dear Dave, great photos and great places, the first in particular must have been stunning. It all awakens in me a nostalgia for the English countryside with that adjective "rolling" that seems to belong to it more than anywhere else...
I love the Cotswolds in particular, I lived by some friends in Charlbury...

And under such a blue sky!

Thanks Dave, I've never been there so that was both lovely to look at and tempting. The house is to die for!
I thought "poppy trees" was very funny.

Beautiful- I could live there...with the gardener- too much work- gardener would have to stay.

Yes, I am sure there was an irrigation system.

Stephen
It is a superb place, certainly. And only half an hour from where we live! There is always something new to see.

Derrick
I've photographed the house so many times that my favourites tend to be whatever's new. Yes, the mallets do look big, I agree - one in particular.

steven
Yes, I too have great difficulty remembering all the botanical names! It was surprisingly peaceful for August, crowds of mums and children arriving as we did, but the gardens are big enough to lose a multitude.

hope
We chose the hottest day of the year so far, so tended to stay with the shade of trees.

The Weaver of Grass
I, too, have never seen a weed - not even in the hands of a gardener!
Thanks for the good wishes. Regards to you and yours.

Tommaso
I take your point about the "rolling" nature of most English countryside.

Pamela Terry and Edward
I was tempted at one point to take a photograph of the sky, in case it proved to be a one-off!

Titus
Thanks for that. Glad you liked it.

Linda Sue
Yup, I wouldn't mind a flat in the house.

Poetic Artist
Much enjoyed, thanks.

Adrian
Sure is.

We're currently under water rationing here in Southern California and sometimes go for 6 months at a stretch without rain. The vast expanses of greenery you captured are lovely - thanks for taking us along!

The first picture... how exactly is it arranged.. I looked hard for a long time, couldn't make out.. what is it at the base of the flowers?
The section with cacti seems quite rich.
An enjoyable tour.. thank you!

This is the kind of thing I miss about England....the beautiful places and gardens.

This is one of those places that is on my (fantasy) must visit list. The house looks gorgeous, and I love the cactus house too.

Yup, correct on both counts. It wss a superb day, and with the weather we've had since, it's getting better in memory by the day!

Golden West
Yes, I've been reading about your water shortage. No such problems here -at the moment, but who knows....? Thanks for the comment.

Phoenix
The picture is taken from the top of a very high and steep bank which has been made into a rockery. You can see the path that I had walked along to the right of the pool and at the base another path. I am actually standing on a rock. Welcome, good to have you along.

readingsully2
Yes, I guess it's what I would miss - I know it's what Doreen would.

Many thanks for your kind award - and sorry about the delay.

Eryl
In fact I think the photographs do not do it justice - and there is so much more of it.
