Haiku #80

Mothering Sunday
children picking wild flowers -
acts of love for mums.

(What a strange beast, progress is!)

Not sure that I get this? Because of the very last line, I mean.

I'm with Tabor, Dave. Or are you referring to the commercial pressures of Mother's day in May? Bought rather than picked flowers.

Mother's Day here is in May. Is it today in the UK? I think I get it - for all we think we've changed as a people, the simple act of a child picking flowers for her mother remains a constant sign of love. (Or...maybe not what you meant at all?)

My reading was the same as Elizabeth. I actually remember my father taking my brothers and I out to a field to pick flowers for my mom. Then he cooked the meals and did the cleaning that day.

Now our daughters send cards and cut flowers and I take Linda out for dinner.

Like Karen and Barry this poem brings back childhood memories of walking through the local woods and hillsides picking flowers first thing in the morning. Rushing home getting changed and then walking to church.

Those 'mums' get all the special treatment, don't they? Loved this.

Hi Dave,

I'm also taking it that you mean it is still the simple gestures in life that mean the most, despite all our modernity. I'm sure that nothing beats something handmade or a few wild flowers from a child on Mothers' Day.

Like the irony in the second one. Spot on.

This is so sweet. I remember the days my children would pick a flower and present it to me. Great memories.

Mothers and mums, nice play on words.

both haiku are spot on.
Sod the "day of celebrating Mum", celebrate her, if you can or must, every day of her life.

God, I am a miseryguts.

Just contrasting what used to be with today's commercialised set-up - although we now recognise that picking wild flowers is not a wholly "good" activity.

Elisabeth
Yes, that as one half of the picture.

Karen
Yup, I'd ov erlooked that. Yesterday was Mother's Day - or as I still prefer to say, Mothering Sunday - in the UK.

Barry
Guess that sums it up pretty well.

Gwei
Yup, it was such memories that suggested it.

Kass
No such creepy things
given house room mothers' day -
Mother hated them.

steven
Many thanks

ArtistUnplugged
Puns is us!

Helen
Sometimes they do!

Derrick
I did mean that, yes.

MadamDeFarge
Thanks for that.

TechnoBabe
Mmm, I was remembering, too, when ours were young enough to do the same for Doreen

Ronda
Thanks.

Friko
That's not b eing a miseryguts. I agree.

Shadow
Shame, yes - but better for the environment.
