the rhododendrons
footprints lead to them     paws return
metamorphosis

my "aunt's" lost purse
found some weeks later by a friend
safely guarded by a fox
in its shoe box laid among
chewed gloves wet papers and old coins

Love the haiku and tanka - some animals are so incredible - they do sometimes display very human traits. A klepto fox - well there you have it!

I don't understand the title (maybe 'cause I'm a Yank?). Mash, being an alcohol kind of concoction, right? is this magic realism of a sort? I'm confused . . . that first stanza has a neat ping-pong effect on me as I read, trying to follow, but I'm still confused.
