As Different as Dawn and Dusk

Light was always the uncertain thing
except it came from love.
Love is the death of all uncertainty,
including that of light,
but light is not the object of our search.
How could we search for light?
The light finds us.
Once found, we are the light
and when we are,
both dawn and dusk look different.

If we could go back to our first beginnings,
find there, the point that we have now attained,
but not to start again,
to verify our compass bearings -
an aviator might have said:
recalibrate our altimeters -
might we not
then find ourselves rewarded by
new panoramas, insights into
what might become the end games of our lives?

We'd find ourselves still here, I'm sure;
still in this time and place,
but with the time and place transfigured -
the evening from the prospect of a dawn.

I love the idea that we can't search for light, as it finds us, and once it finds us WE are the light. Profound, and translates into so many life situations.

I agree with Mary...nice write.

Beautiful, thoughtful build to the final stanza, which I love the first three lines of, but I'm still pondering the last. This may be a good thing.

'the evening from the prospect of a dawn' - this sounds so hopeful.

the evening from a prospect of dawn is a very cool line dave....i dont know that i would want to know what is coming...but i do enjoy the light, when it finds me...smiles.

This contemplation of beginnings enfolded into endings resonates very strongly, Dave. Beautifully composed - one of your best.

Profound and so true that light finds us. So many people spend a lifetime searching for the light, though.

Well, the Four Quartets are about this...and "time and place transfigured- the evening from the prospect of dawn" brings back to memory that regenerating force.

i like how you say that light finds us.

as forr "recalibrate our altimeters" this is done by change in pressure, and that's a whole metaphor and poem right there (or a good one for this week's dverse assignment for allegory)

'recalibrate'
'prospect of a dawn'
'light finds us'

Richness to ponder. . .

I agree with you, Dave. I still would like to find myself and I'm sure I could.

Thanks for saying this. Much appreciated.

ayala
Thanks.

Titus
I meant it as a good thing, though that's no guarantee, I suppose! Thanks for your thoughts.

jabblog
Yes, it was meant as a hopeful image. Thank you.

Brian
I think I agree about not wanting to see ahead. Appreciate your comments.

Dick
Thanks very much for this. Really good to know.

Adura
Indeed. I guess we all start off doing so.

Tommaso
Indeed they are, my thanks for bringing me back to them. I didn't have them in mind when I wrote it, but now I'm thinking that maybe I should have!

zongrik
Yes, I was aware that I had transposed into a different metaphor, but thought I would go with it and see what happened. Thanks for the observation.

Cloudia
Nice comment! Thanks.

Windsmoke
Indeed, yes.

Friko
Yes, I do hope so. Thank you for saying it.

JJ Roa
Thank you so much for saying.

Is this where faith comes in, I wonder?

Love is the Law, as another colourful poet once said! . You put it so succintly , the opposites transcended only by love. Fantastique

For me this poem is entirely about hope. I had to read it three times, just to feel the words inside, without thinking about them. The last line did drive that hope home to me.
