if so, why would anyone? :P

You don't actually have to look through a telescope. There are other ways of looking (using cameras, for example. The point is that more is known about distant stars than about our own sun, despite its importance to us. NASA is going some way today to
correct the imbalance by launching a figure-of-eight probe that (hopefully) will send back unprecedented data on sunspots etc.
I take Dan's point, though.
