ha ha, and they always do!!
They smile because forecasting is rather funny. The forecasters don't exactly know what Mother Nature has in store for them, and on the other hand people expect them to be able to change bad weather into a more pleasant one.
Because they have jobs... ?
Because good news isn't news.
They are paid to :) A smile goes a long way!!!
I think it has something to do with bad news is good news and who cares to report about the sunny weather?
Because they're really nasty bits of work and enjoy our suffering. or something like that.

Nice poem, Dave! Their smiles are nervous ones, I think... Fear that people will continue to hate them for their incorrect predictions... I do not envy someone in their position...

I guess that they can take a joke, besides swearing is not allowed.
My guess is they smile because any "good" job in corporate capitalism requires employees to distance themselves from their emotions so completely that they seldom check in with their hearts to see if what they're smiling about is happy.

They know, the forecast can go horribly wrong :)
were they to not smile, would we not have a reason to worry.
It's even worse when they do that after telling of a horrible car crash....
