Two Poems
Sometimes the idea of a thing
is better than the thing itself.
Truth is a case in point.
Sometimes the thing itself
is better than our thought of it.
Truth is a case in point.
From truth, the ultimate commodity,
the challenge is,
not knowing it for what it is,
but knowing what to do with it.
...........................................
Summer
and the sea kicks up.
believes it Autumn.
My mind, excited,
rares to go,
one with the waves
where I cannot follow.
Wishing the ocean
swelling beneath me,
driftwood the thoughts
tumbled and spun,
waves barrelling in.
............................................
I am now intending to take a few days off, to clear the mind of blogs and blogging for a bit. Not sure when I will return - probably late next week. Happy times to you all meanwhile - and thanks for your continued, and much valued, support.

Enjoy your time off, goo sir! :)
I think you deserve the time off, Dave. Enjoy!
The fifth stanza in your first poem resonates in me.
And I enjoyed to hit the curl in your second poem. Thank you.
Take the well deserved rest, Dave and come back fighting!
Hank
travel well over the next week dave....i look forward to your return...i really like as well how you make us think in this...particularly in the first one...
Indeed what to do with the truth IS the question!
Enjoy your well-deserved break.
Both lovely poems - distilled, spot-on, very different but kind of fun together with one so philosophical the other tactile.
Enjoy enjoy your break! k.
I like the first one very much. It’s the sort of thing I would write in fact I think truth crops up in more of my poems than anything else. I’m not sure about the ‘From’ in the last stanza. I think I would have written ‘As for’ but it’s a minor point. It works. I’ve read it over several times but keep tripping on that one word. Other than that, excellent. I like how the second poem opens but it doesn’t really keep my interest—few nature poems do so the fault is not yours—but I do like the opening sentence.
Truth is everything I value in someone.
Loved the pair of these. Enjoy your break and come back feeling refreshed and raring to go Dave.
The first, I love. Truth IS the ultimate commodity, isn't it?
The second resonates with me even more strongly. I brings images of magical childhood holidays, in times when my world was still a mysterious place. The sea in summer was the ultimate place to be then.
You have revived such wonderful memories today. Thank you so very much.
Have a super break, Dave :)
Your poetry always speaks to me, Dave, and I don't get over here, or comment, often enough.
Enjoy your time away.

Maturity and judgment, it seems to me, is indeed all the hinders "truth" from doing more harm than good. That insight at the end gives this poem weight and purpose. An economic poem that slices right to the end.
The second works with the autumn imagery riding over or overriding the summer. Must be delicious as out summer or as you would say, our bakingoven months merely give way to a barren burned lightening of temperature as we hand on with sweaty brow to the thought of somewhat cooler time by late November when the weather sometimes turns as fair as English weather...what we wouldn't give for clouds to bring rain (sigh).
Go recharge your batteries my friend. My show and work schedule will have 7 day work weeks for the next 3 weeks. Then I am happily going to play in the surf on Cape Cod for a week myself.
I love your view on truth...so true~!
I love the imagery of your second poem...gorgeous thoughts! :D
Thanks Everyone,
both for your comments, as insightful as always, and for your good wishes.
Hope to see you all again soon - though don't intend to travel far, Brian. Just chill out!
I enjoyed them instantly, the second belongs to the setting which probably most love and is so close to me.
Have a good time and feed your soul with new experiences to share with us.
:)
Hi Mr Dave, like your post and take a good care of yourselfand enjoy your holidays.but come back soon:)
I very much like this, and especially
those lines: "Summer and the sea kicks up, believes it Autumn."
I'm still replaying that first poem in my head. "Sometimes the idea of a thing
is better than the thing itself."
Yes, and a hundred times yes. Loved it.
Many thanks.
Have a nice time off.
Greetings from London.
Hi Dave.
Enjoyed reading both poems. The first poem...so true in every way. It's like finding a new angle to something we've always known. Penned so well too. Enjoy your time away.
So eminently quotable...
Have a great time, sir!!
ok chilling out...smiles.
I love them both. Thank you. Sometimes it's important to take a break, but I am very glad to see that you are back!
