Lip Service

As often happens,
youngsters were among the first
to see
the gross stupidity of rape,
destruction of the earth.

Now everyone's a guru
all can see what they once saw:
the foolishness,
the suicide
of sucking this,
our only planet dry,
converting it
into a fast heat breeder
that will cook us all.

Now everyone can see it
(more or less - a few
elective blind aside)
and all agree
(except the youth, it seems,
are less inclined
to give it thought)
that something should be done,

there's just this lack
of people to accept
responsibility,
step up to take control.

Our leaders wont,
so who then will?

Don't you think everyone always saw, but as ever, money and cronies rule the way things are done. I'm afraid I think that it is evolution at work, and we are evolving ourselves out of existence. The planet probably needs fewer so called "intelligent" inhabitants and more "unintelligent" ones who don't use technology to do harm.

The problem is that humans are good at responding to an imminent threat but hopeless at long term planning,

Jenny is very wise.

To be perspective or not is important when we have responsibility, and it is quite difficult under current condition.
Your writing makes me ponder.

Not sure about this line:

    'are less inclined'

I keep wanting to add a 'who' at the start of it.

Terribly engaging question at the end Because it is hard, hard to give an effective answer.

"there's just this lack..." Simple yet emphatic, and very effective. Big question to end on.

Good questions! Guess we have to help in whatever way we can in our own small way.

Its too late we're all gunna be cooked alive by the end of this century because of government indecision and corporate greed getting in the way :-).

I don't see anyone in governments or business standing up and saying "The buck stops here." People within any given country can't agree on anything. Why would we ever expect that the WORLD would get together and solve a problem?

I do take your point. However, I don't think most people ALWAYS saw. I think it dawned slowly on us, but even after it had dawned most were very reluctant to see what was then staring them in the face. The same way many would not see the connection between smoking and cancer, even after the evidence had been laid out for us to see.

That quibble aside, you are absolutely right in what you say.

Cait
Yes, indeed.

Sometimes we over-complicate issues - and not always from the best motives.

Jim
I would be quite happy for you to do so, Jim. I give you my blessing.

Mama Zen
Thank you.

Helen
Kind words. Thanks.

Tommaso
Yes, that's the crux of the problem, I think. We have to find a way that doesn't leave it entirely to the vagaries of our leaders.

Rachel
I think that sums it up nicely. Thanks.

Strummed Words
Good to have your take on this. Thanks for it. If everyone would make their contribution...

Brian
That is a mighty hope which I share yet dare not often speak aloud.

Windsmoke
I don't think the evidence such as it is quite bears that out. It's NEARLY too late, but there may still be time to head off the worst effects.

Mary
I agree. I don't think it could happen that way. I think it could only come about through smaller units doing what was possible for them - the same way the damage was done in the first place, and is still being done. The nations are not all at the same point, so action could not be concerted.
