The Haiku probably wasn't explicit enough. This has nothing to do with being allergic or not to the animal. The belief is that having a dog will cure or ease allergies in general. I haven't been able to track down the mechanism involved.
I never heard doctors recommend pets for allergies. I AM allergic to cats but not at all to dogs. (not that your interested...just saying.)
